CAMPING ON THE Deschutes: Between Shearer's falls and Mack's canyon there are many public campgrounds that offer boats ramps and improved restrooms. A very nice campground at Mack's canyon has an 'Old West' feel. It is not uncommon to see bighorn sheep, mule deer, rattlesnakes and birds of prey all in one day while camping at Mack's. Above shearer's their are more campground used mostly by summer rafters near the Maupin area, well known for summer whitewater rafting. Some camping areas are located on the river itself for use by boaters. Much of the East side of the river around and above shearer's is owned by the Warm Springs Indian Res. and requires a permit for limited use. Along highway 84 past the Dalles another large campground is located at the mouth of the river, also with boat ramp. Jets boats are allowed in the lowe section of the river on certain days and can access additional campground for boater use. Reservation boundary lines do not extend this far North so much ofthe land directly along the river here is public. Boater sites are maintained and cleaned by agents in boats drifting the river but please help them and practice no trace camping when using these boat in campgrounds. These agents also check boater use permits.
